The Tronsmart USB Type C car charger has been a hot topic for debate. The famous Benson Leung, Google Pixel Engineer and USB Type C crusader, has deemed this product “not approved” after testing. His Amazon review states that the built-in USB Type C cable is out of spec for USB Type C 1.1 power delivery.
Others online have tested the cable with Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P devices and are stating that the car charger is working just fine. The conflicting information has caused confusion and arguments. My recommendation would be to err on the side of caution and avoid this specific Tronsmart car charger. Benson has a solid track record, so I will stick by his testing methods.
That being said, the good news is that I have been in contact with Tronsmart and they are launching a brand new car charger. The new charger will be Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 with USB Type C (3A/5V). I am hoping to get my hands on one of these new chargers within the next week and will report my findings on the cable. Stay tuned for an upcoming review… once the product is available!
